Obituary of Clara Martin

Clara Martin was born June 1, 1927 in Dillingham, AK to Aleut mother Natalia (Pavilla) Johnson and Finnish father William (Mannila) Johnson. She was the youngest of eleven children: four died at birth, and the rest predeceased her. Clara was closest to her sisters Ella, Vera, and Annie. Clara Johnson married Melvin Martin of Bellingham on September 13, 1947 after meeting in a cannery in Dillingham; they settled in Bellingham. The family was extremely industrious and enjoyed commercial salmon fishing and boat building success during times when that industry was at its best.

Clara was an avid vegetable, flower and indoor plant gardener. Everything thrived under her thumb, and she mastered canning and cooking. She knitted and crocheted and quilted her way to blue ribbons at the Fair. She loved her dogs and cats and every form of wildlife that strolled or flew by. Clara was devoted to her church fellowship and bible study, was incredibly patient and kind, lived to love, and loved to giggle. Anyone she met from Alaska was of instant kinship.

Clara’s husband, Mel, died in 2010, and she is survived by her children, Warren Martin (Colleen) and Cheryl Martin. Her grandchildren are Christy Martin (Deryck Deubler), Carrie Booth (Doug Booth), and Craig Martin. Even her great-grandchildren were lucky to know her: Natalia Deen, Gavin Booth, and Sydney Booth. And several nieces and nephews survive her throughout Washington and Alaska.

May she rest in peace. A memorial service will take place on Thurs. Mar. 22 at 12 PM at Greenacres Memorial Park (5700 Northwest Dr., Ferndale).
