Obituary of Joan Furlong

Joan Furlong (née O'Sullivan) of Bellingham, WA, peacefully passed away on June 23, 2018, surrounded by her family. Joan was 95 years old.

Joan is survived by her children Jean Furlong, Elaine Furlong, and Paul Furlong of Bellingham, WA, and Georgina Furlong-Head (Mike Head) of Portland, OR, her four granddaughters Natalie Head, Sarah Head, Caitlin Ramberg, and Keriann Head, her great-granddaughters Josephine, Devin, Elliott, and her great-grandson Lucas. She is preceded in death by her husband George Furlong of Bellingham, WA, and her daughter Elizabeth Furlong of Bellingham, WA.

Joan was born on November 22, 1922 in Dublin, Ireland to Eugene and Josephine O'Sullivan. She moved to Queens, NY in 1957 where she raised her five children, moving to Bellingham in 1980. Joan was an accomplished singer, who performed with the Whatcom Chorale and Assumption Choir. She was an active and dedicated member of the Church of the Assumption and also volunteered at the St. Joseph Hospital gift shop.

As the oldest of 14 children, Joan's love spread through multiple generations and continents. We were blessed by her continuous connection with close and extended family throughout the U.S., Ireland, England, and Australia. We are all united by her love, grace, and kindness.

Joan passed away peacefully at Whatcom Hospice House. She will be remembered as a beloved sister, mother, auntie, grandmother, and great-grandmother and we will miss her dearly.

A funeral is scheduled for Friday, July 6th at 10:30 a.m. at Church of the Assumption (2116 Cornwall Avenue). All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joan's life.

The family would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Center for Senior Health, St. Joseph Hospital, and Whatcom Hospice House. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Whatcom Hospice House in memory of Joan Furlong.
